ZDF sets on dicas MPEG-4 software “mpegable DS”
Presentation at IFA 2007 / ZDF orders Live Encoder “dicas 2010” 17 August 2007 | Berlin, Germany For its online video portal “ZDF Mediathek”, German public broadcaster ZDF sets on dicas MPEG-4 software “mpegable DS”. The cooperation between the Broadcaster and the video coding specialist dicas includes also the usage of Live Encoders called “dicas 2010”. “mpegable DS”, a collection of MPEG-4, AVC and 3GPP compatible components, was developed by dicas to enable software manufacturers to easily integrate MPEG-4 into their applications. The “dicas 2010” is a 19” live encoder, which is used in Internet TV, Streaming and studio applications. With approximately 5 million requests, the ZDF Mediathek is one of the largest video portals in Europe. The Mediathek is a central component of the ZDF’s internet offerings. Starting with IFA in Berlin, the Mediathek delivers a variety of information and a selection of the TV feature film and documentary programming as seven day TV on demand. With three different editions for Web as well as , in form of a prototype, for TV and Mobiles, ZDF is offering viewers a service, which can be delivered on demand to all relevant play-back devices such as PC, TV, Handhelds und Smartphones. In order to also support the open standard and platform independent MPEG-4 AVC, after an extensive tender ZDF has decided to use the software and hardware products of the Berlin-based company. The head of technology for the new ZDF Mediathek, Jochen Schmidt, comments: “We are convinced that through, the introduction of MPEG-4 AVC, we have made a decision for a trend-setting and top quality format, through which we can reach even more viewers, also Apple and Linux users. For us, stability and the ability to integrate the software into our existing transcoding platform are most important.” The Managing Director of dicas, Dr Philipp Kraetzer, explains: “We are very pleased that with the ZDF Mediathek - one of the most important video portals - has decided to use MPEG-4.
